Let’s talk about the terror of every author or a writer, the Comma. Everybody is aware that it’s a pause between the sentences but no one ever understood when to give that pause and when not to. The problem arises from one’s choice to take that pause, sometimes or wait! Most of the time, we add commas to places where it’s unnecessary and ignore where it’s necessary. But who will decide if it’s necessary or not? And on what basis can one conclude the necessity? Here is a mini guide for better understanding on usage of commas, if not the best.
- First one has to understand that no one can travel with their legs on multiple platforms for long hence, one has to stick to one style and not get confused with multiple styles. Now few of us must be wondering if English had various styles and answer to that is, yes!
- Commas with Conjunctions- Always use a comma while using conjunctions like but, and, so, etc., Use before a conjunction in case of an independent clause and after a conjunction in case of a dependant clause.
Eg: I went to movie so, couldn’t attend the lecture.
Eg: The cinema was full, so I cancelled on movie.
- The always rule- Always use a comma in case of different items of series, while addressing someone in a sentence, in direct speeches, while using appositives, while mentioning dates, addresses, number, titles and while using a question tag.
Eg: They are my friends Sita, Gita, Babita and Lalitha.
Eg: Rahul, get me a glass of water.
Eg: Narendra Modi, the prime minister of India, declared lockdown in 2021 again.
Eg: Phani said, “I am too busy to talk’”
Eg: We met on 25th October, 2021
Eg: I haven’t finished my assignment, have you?
